SUMMARY

On a relatively newly built dwelling, the owners sought to gain extra space by the addition of a single storey extension off the rear elevation. The problem? The presence of a large mature protected Oak tree just outside the rear boundary. The root protection area (i.e. the extent of root zone considered to be critical to the health of the tree) extended across the majority of the rear garden of the property, meaning that the extension itself would encroach into the root protection area. Using our in-depth knowledge of tree biology, root morphology and detailed understanding of BS5837 Trees in relation to design, demolition & construction – Recommendations, we were able to justify the construction of the extension, allowing it to be approved by the local planning authority.

If you are looking to extend your property and there are trees nearby, give us a call, we’re happy to give a view on what options are feasible.
